IdentifierIdentifierExplanationExplanation
Part III, Line 1a, Part III Line 4The Museum has extensive collections of specimens and artifacts that constitute a record of life on Earth. These valuable, and sometimes irreplaceable, collections have been acquired through field expeditions, contribution and purchases since the Museum's inception and represent one of the largest natural history collections in the world. New collection areas include the Museum's frozen tissue collection of DNA and tissue samples and access to large scientific databases of genomic and astrophysical data. The collections provide a resource for scientists around the world. The collections grow significantly each year. The collections are the property of the Museum and are not recognized as assets in the accompanying consolidated statements of financial position. They are held under the care of the curatorial staff for scientific research, educational and public exhibition purposes in furtherance of the Museum's mission. The Museum's collections policy requires that the proceeds from the sale of collection items be used for acquisitions to the collections. If the assets used to purchase the collection items are restricted by donors, proceeds from the sale of those items are recorded as increases in temporarily restricted net assets. The cost of collections purchased is recorded as a decrease in net assets in the year purchased. The value of donated collection items is not recorded.
Part X, FIN 48U.S. GAAP requires that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The Museum does not believe its consolidated financial statements include any uncertain tax positions for the open tax years of 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007.
Part V, Line 4The Museum's endowment funds include both donor-restricted and board of trustee designated funds. These funds are invested under the oversight of the investment committee and used to support operating and non operating activities pursuant to budgetary appropriations by the Budget and Finance committee.

ExplanationThe use of grant funds outside the United States is monitored in accordance with The AMNH Sub-Award Administration and Monitoring Policy, the AMNH Grants Manual, and Federal OMB A133 requirements. The Museum performs an assessment of the candidate's ability to perform the work required prior to granting an award. Post-award risk based monitoring is accomplished through periodic reporting from grantees regarding the use of grant funds, field investigations and site visits conducted by AMNH staff, and regular contact with the grantee. Because foreign grantees are not subject to federal OMB A133 audit, in accordance with OMB A133 AMNH utilizes additional methods of monitoring in the form of more frequent and extensive reporting and review by AMNH.Explanation

Part III, Question 4Overview The American Museum of Natural History is a highly complex, multifaceted organization with broad international scope and impact. It is one of the world's pre-eminent natural history museums and cultural institutions. The Museum plays a central and growing role in training the next generation of scientists and scientifically literate citizens. It has evolved into a hybrid institution reaching across scientific research, educational, cultural and governmental boundaries to enhance the public understanding and engagement with science. Highlights 2010 Despite being one of the most difficult and volatile financial climates in recent decades, fiscal year 2010 was a remarkable year for the Museum, experiencing many important milestones across all areas of the institution. The Museum's Richard Gilder Graduate School, the only museum-based graduate school in the nation confirming the Ph.D. degree, received full accreditation in FY10 (in the first year it was eligible to apply), and the Museum has now admitted three classes of superbly promising young scientists into its Ph.D. program in comparative biology. This year, the Museum also achieved an all-time high in competitive federal grant funding for both research and educational activities, an important external validation of the increasing relevance and impact of the Museum's work. The Museum has seen a tremendous upsurge in attendance in the past few years and this year welcomed approximately five million visitors, the highest attendance in its history. Remarkably, nearly 40% were visitors to New York from overseas. Through an active program of touring exhibitions and collaborative relationships with institutions around the world, this year the Museum's special exhibitions, planetarium shows, Digital Universe atlas and Science Bulletins were seen in more than 100 venues in over 20 countries worldwide-reaching millions more. The Museum also has been steadily building a digital presence. Unique visitors to its website amnh.org numbered over 6 million. The Museum's YouTube video, "The Known Universe," became a viral sensation this year and, with more than seven million views, one of the site's top science videos of all time. It takes viewers on a thrilling and inspiring journey from Earth to the edge of the known universe and back. The Museum launched its first iPhone applications as well, beginning with Dinosaurs, (which had 130,000 downloads in the first three weeks) and then its groundbreaking Explorer app, an "internal GPS" personal navigation system for visitors to find their way around the Museum - the first of its kind in any Museum in the world. Visitors may download Explorer on their own devices or borrow an iPod touch at the Museum at no cost. Scientific Research, Scholarship, and Teaching The Museum's scientific work underpins everything the Museum does in exhibition and education. The Museum is home to more than 200 scientists - including tenured and tenure-track curators/faculty - who conduct research in genomics, astrophysics, zoology, paleontology, earth and planetary sciences, and anthropology. The scientific staff publishes its work in major peer-reviewed journals, with approximately 300 pieces published in FY10. Their work is partially funded by some 11 different federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Museum's recent additions to its research capacity include some of the most advanced imaging technology available. The Museum's Microscopy and Imaging Facility (MIF) acquired a new GE Phoenix V/tome/x Dual- Tube Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner under a Major Research Instrumentation grant funded by NSF. It also acquired a new Zeiss Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope funded through NASA, and a Nordif Electron Backscatter Diffraction system. Collections The collections and research assets of the Museum were further enriched by continued exploration that included over 120 expeditions and field projects in 2010 across the globe. Major projects are underway in Mongolia, Peru, Madagascar, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico, Republic of Congo, Thailand, India, the Artic of Canada, Russia, New Guinea, and Australia. The Museum also continued its investment in the areas of frozen tissue and digital data collection in response to emerging research needs in genomics and astrophysics, and the availability of the newest technologies such as CT data and other digital imaging procedures. The Ambrose Monell Collection for Molecular and Microbial Research increased its collection in fiscal year 2010 by 12,773 samples, currently housing 67,037 samples of tissue and DNA representing 6,731 species. Specimens and artifacts held in collections continue to yield vast amounts of new information through direct observation and comparison, and, as new technologies emerge, through high-resolution imaging and analysis. These data are increasingly linked together by way of sophisticated informatics networks, accelerating research and applications for exploration. The Museum's scientific collections total over 32 million specimens and cultural artifacts. Within the Museum's collections are many spectacular individual collections, from butterflies and spiders to dinosaurs and fossil mammals; from fishes and primates to crocodilians and birds. They include meteorites, gems and minerals and cultural artifacts. The collections are accessible for research on site, on-line, and through loans to scientists around the world, continually adding to both the Museum's and the broader scientific community's knowledge and understanding. The Museum's extensive research loan program typically has over 1,500 active loans of over 300,000 specimens to other institutions at any given time. The Museum further provides online access to its collections, with an estimated 95% of the collections, other than entomology, data-based and accessible online at this time. The Museum's extremely active program of international field expeditions is responsible for an annual growth in collections of about 90,000 specimens. Preserving the Museum's collections for study by future generations with new technological capacity has never been more important, the Museum continues to dedicate significant time to the training of conservation interns in the relatively new field of natural science collections conservation. In 2010, the Museum received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' (IMLS) "Museums for America" program to accomplish a risk evaluation of all collections on exhibit. Research Library The Research Library is one of the largest natural history libraries in the Western Hemisphere. Its primary function is to serve and support the work of the Museum's scientific staff, while also serving natural history scholars from around the world, as well as members of the general public. The Library's holdings comprise a research collection, special collections (including a rare book collection), and digital collections. Its catalogues are part of an international online library catalogue database that is available at public libraries and university libraries as well as through the Museum's website. In FY10, the Library continued to build on efforts to increase access to, preserve, and grow its collections. The Museum received a large gift of 2,462 books from the estate of Ronald S. Wilkinson, a historian of science; the published papers of the annual James Arthur Lecture were digitized and added to the growing body of Museum publications available in the Museum's digital repository. In addition, as a founding member of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) - a consortium of 12 major natural history museums libraries, botanical libraries, and research institutions to digitize and preserve the legacy literature of biodiversity - the Museum's Library hosted BHL's annual Institutional Council's meeting while the Library staff continued to be involved in BHL efforts to incorporate additional publications and enhance tools offered for research.
Part III, Question 4 (cont.)Gilder Graduate School Fiscal Year 2010 marked the Richard Gilder Graduate School's receipt of institutional accreditation from the New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Higher Education. This landmark achievement took place after only a single year of academic operations. In FY 2010, the Richard G. Gilder Graduate School also matriculated its second class of students and admitted its third class of candidates for a Ph.D. degree in comparative biology. Over the summer of 2009, students from the inaugural class of the Ph.D. program in comparative biology worked in the field, from Mongolia to the Caribbean to Canada, and in the fall, all passed their qualifying examinations and advanced to candidacy. To cultivate and train the next generation of scientists, the Graduate School also conducts a doctoral and post-doctoral training program in collaboration with five major universities, serving approximately 100 post-doctoral fellows and graduate students each year. The universities are Columbia University, Cornell University, SUNY Stony Brook, New York University, and the City University of New York. The Graduate School's undergraduate training program, funded by the National Science Foundation, provides a select number of undergraduate students with intensive research experience in such subjects as evolutionary biology, earth and planetary sciences, and astrophysics. Rose Center for Earth and Space / Astrophysics The award-winning Rose Center comprises 333,500 square feet including the permanent exhibition halls, educational facilities, and the Hayden Planetarium, The Hayden Planetarium houses a powerful virtual reality simulator, which is used to develop, produce and display for the public educational planetarium shows that are informative, sophisticated and realistic. The Museum's latest Space Show, Journey to the Stars, premiered on July 4, 2009, while its prior Space Show offerings (Cosmic Collisions, Passport to the Universe, and The Search for Life: Are We Alone?) were presented in 33 planetariums around the United States and internationally. The Museum's astrophysics department, comprising over 23 PhD scientists, provides curatorial leadership for the exhibitions, planetarium shows, and educational programs of the Rose Center. Conducting research in observational, theoretical, and computational astrophysics, Museum astrophysicists study the origin and evolution of planets, stars, stellar clusters, and galaxies using ground- and space-based telescopes, supercomputers, and theoretical studies. Researchers receive funding from and collaborate with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and employ partnerships with land- and space-based telescopes to further their work. Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics The Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics' (SICG) science facilities (the Sackler Educational Laboratory in the Museum's Spitzer Hall of Human Origins) and programs (which include the Museum's Comparative Genomics Research Program; several molecular and microbial genomics laboratories; the world's largest frozen tissue repository of non-human species ; and a parallel computing facility of the Museum) currently support 40 graduate students and 12 postdoctoral DNA Barcoding Initiative for Conservation (DBIC) fellows. The Sackler Institute's research programs are complemented by education and outreach activities and facilities that convey critical scientific concepts to diverse audiences. The facility's importance to the conservation of species has also been widely reported in the media. Center for Biodiversity and Conservation The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation ("CBC") conducts conservation-related field projects around the world, and works to preserve global biological diversity. The Center conducts international training programs for scientists, organizes scientific symposia, presents public programs, and produces publications geared toward scientists, policy makers, and the lay public. In FY 2010, its Biodiversity Informatics Facility focused on modeling Arctic vegetation responses to climate change; conservation capacity building in Southeast Asia; using remote sensing data to predict distributions for birds in North American forests; and examining the biogeography of chameleons in Madagascar. The CBC began work on the Student Conference on Conservation Science for graduate students, recent post-doctoral fellows, and early career professionals, for which five hundred applications were submitted for 200 awards leading up to the November 2010 conference. The Director of the CBC also represented the Museum at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-15) in Copenhagen. The CBC hosted the North American launch of the International Year of Biodiversity and a program on the vital role of biodiversity in children's health. The CBC and National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET) shared the honors as the Seminars on Science course "Water: Environmental Science" won Best Professional Development Solution at the 25th annual CODiE Awards. The CBC also continued its efforts to diminish critical threats to global biological and cultural diversity in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Major projects are underway in Mongolia, Peru, Madagascar, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico, Republic of Congo, Thailand, India, the Arctic area of Canada and Russia, New Guinea, and Australia. Education In FY 2010, more than 500,000 children from throughout the City and country visited in organized school groups. Visits are supported by Museum-created comprehensive guides that allow teachers to prepare for, enrich, and follow up on their educational visits to the Museum, while many more children participated in after-school enrichment programs. The Museum provided professional development programs to more than 4,300 K-12 educators, many offering teachers the opportunity to earn certificates of continuing professional education and credits toward advanced degrees in science education through the City University of New York and other universities. In a new partnership with the New York City Department of Education, the Museum's eScience Program worked with more than 30 schools across grades 4 through 10 in two of Brooklyn's critical-needs districts on a professional development program that supports teachers' mastery of scientific content, use of technology in classroom instruction, and informal science learning through the Museum. Museum Educators will work on-site with teachers during the next three years to develop curricula that use state-of-the-art technology, while the Museum's cutting-edge science media such as Science Bulletins and the OLogy website will be part of a new "toolkit" that teachers can use to engage students in science learning. The Museum also continued to design and produce educational programs and materials available off-site through use of software, video, web sites, and print publications. The programs were distributed directly to the public, to schools, museums, and NASA space centers, and to K-12 science teachers and students, and families at home. The Museum's signature science education program Urban Advantage, a consortium of eight science-based cultural institutions together with the New York City Department of Education, continued to grow in numbers of participants and impact. This past year, Urban Advantage served 386 teachers and 37,586 students in 174 schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Urban Advantage is emerging as a model program that other cities are seeking to replicate. To that end, the Museum continued to consult with representatives from several other U.S. cities about creating Urban Advantage programs for their own school systems.
Part III, Question 4 (Cont.)Exhibitions For 363 days per year the 45 permanent exhibition halls are open to the public on a pay-as-you-wish basis. The exhibitions provide a field guide to the history of life on Earth, the cultures of humanity, and the latest discoveries in astrophysics. The permanent exhibitions are supplemented throughout the year with a robust program of award-winning temporary exhibitions, almost all created, designed and built by the Museum's staff. Millions of people from around the nation and the world visit the Museum annually, and the Museum remains the most popular family attraction in New York City and the third most popular family destination in the United States by the Zagat Survey U.S. Family Travel Guide. The Museum also displays selections from its exhibitions on its public web site. The Museum opened a number of exciting exhibitions in FY 2010. Traveling the Silk Road: Ancient Pathway to the Modern World took visitors on an immersive, experiential journey along the Silk Road, the "information superhighway" of ancient times; and Race to the End of the Earth, recounted the amazing story of Roald Amundsen and Sir Robert Falcon Scott competing to be the first human to set foot on the South Pole.
