Description Program Service AccomGrow Our Own Healers Program - Health Occupations for Teens ClubThe Health Occupations for Teens Club focuses on providing students in grades 4-12 with health education and careers awareness, exposure, and recruitment into the health and wellness industry through various activities for qualifying age groups. A total of 40 (unduplicated) students participated in five different programs throughout the year. Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA): Twelve high school students expanded knowledge and skills in health science and health professions awareness and development through the HOSA curriculum and participation in the Hawaii State HOSA Conference and Competition gaining experience to advance their health careers. Additionally, three students provided health education to 69 students aged 9-18 at the Boys and Girls Club and Waimea High School English classes on the topics of Adult and Infant CPR and Nutrition and Fitness. Five speakers provided career awareness and direction to 10 students in a mini-conference geared to help students narrow their career focus as they plan for their high school courses. Topics included Licensed Practical Nursing, Home Health Care Nursing, Physical Therapy, Traditional Hawaiian Healing, and How to Navigate the College systems. Kauai Jr. Medical Reserve Corps: Eight high school students gained increased knowledge and skills in emergency preparedness through the quarterly trainings and community service opportunities engaging children and adults in active awareness, preparedness, and response activities concerning potential natural disasters on Kauai. The youth are trained in the Incident Command System of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and practice skills through different roles in mock events.Summer Health Adventure: Six students participated in a three-day event focusing on first-responder awareness and training; developing team-building and problem-based learning skills; and learning about alternative health and wellness modalities, healthy sustainable gardening, food preparation, and culinary arts. All students were certified in CPR and first aid.Summer Health Blast: Nine students in grades 7-12 from various schools across the island participated in an all day event focusing on engaging in fitness activities, exploring one's own learning style, boosting self-confidence, developing team-building skills, learning coping techniques for better health, and experiencing Hawaiian cultural values. The activities also included a volunteerism project assisting the Waipa Foundation in cleaning the water irrigation system for the taro patches. The Waipa Foundation is established for restoring the Native Hawaiian culture of Waipa as a sustainable ahupuaa community of resources from the land to the sea.Youth/Elderly Connection Pilot Program: The program in its second year through Kokua Kalihi Valley Elderly Services extended program development to 15 high school students matched with their elderly relatives living in the Seniors section of the Kalihi Valley Housing complex. The program is provided to students in traditional and non-traditional schools allowing them to learn care-giving skills beginning with their own relatives, a significant cultural component of families in Hawaii. Education and training include taking and recording accurate vital signs, CPR instruction, dressing changes, reading medication labels and assisting with administering of daily medications, recording events in a daily chart, and how to communicate with the medical team of care givers. The pilot program will be further developed for future use in programs on Kauai.POST SECONDARY TRAININGNa Lei Wili AHEC provided travel assistance to five graduate nurses serving as nurse practitioners and providing 98 hours of community service in a rural rotation at the Lanai Community Health Center. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMSDental Health Education and Awareness: The Kauai Dental Task Force consisting of members from local government, community based agencies, health care professionals, and others in the community provided dental health education and awareness and various dental incentives to the community through five major activities. (1) A total of 83 pre-school children and their families attending the 8th Annual Kauai Keiki Story Festival visited the booth for dental health education and an incentives bag consisting of toothbrushes, toothpaste, fluoride rinse, waxed dental floss, and literature on dental health and influenza. (2) Dental health education was presented during National Child Oral Health Month (February) to 22 pre-schools, approximately 880 children ages 3-4, addressing seven areas (brushing, flossing, fluoride rinse, gum disease, plaque, cavities, and nutrition)through interactive activities; students also received dental incentive bags. (3) Seven different public service announcements were written by the task force, reviewed and approved by the task force dental hygienists, and aired on the local radio station in the Spring using the voices of children from local schools. The PSA messages tie into oral health and wellness, baby bottle tooth decay, brushing and flossing, fluoride use, and nutrition. Two student interns provided graphic design of an activity book and coloring book augmented with the PSA messages as a regular item for the dental incentive bags. Projected printing and distribution is tentative for the Fall/Winter of 2010/2011. (4) Ninety-two children and adults responded to a dental survey presented at the Eastside Family Summit to identify families with insurance coverage and access to a dental home. Most of the individuals did have insurance coverage and visited their dentists regularly. Those without insurance were given information on community health centers providing dental services, and all were encouraged to seek dental services regularly. All children nine years old and under received dental incentive bags. (5) Over 500 children received information and incentive bags at the annual Parent and Child Fair, and 75 dental incentive bags were distributed between Kauai Good Beginnings Alliance for its children entering foster care, and to the Children with Special Health Needs on Kauai.Alcohol/Underage Drinking and Driving: In partnership with the County of Kauai Anti-Drug Program, the Shattered Dreams alcohol/underage drinking and driving education and awareness program began promotions with a calendar fundraiser featuring members of the Hawaii Firefighters Association Kauai Division and the County of Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau and Fire Department. The funds raised supplemented the cost of the training program for first responders to the alcohol/underage drinking-related auto accidents and the production of the crash simulations at the different public high schools targeted for the 2010-2011 school year. The program expects to target one of the three high schools with enrollment between 863 and 1,249 students just prior to the peak of alcohol/underage drinking events like proms. Tobacco Prevention and Cessation: Prevention services provided by two health educators reached approximately 75 elementary students in Kilauea; Intervention services reached 147 high school students and 30 college students; and one-on-one cessation services were provided to 76 youth, three adult staff, and 1 parent. Program successes come from the unified program to all three school complexes on Kauai including private and parochial schools, the incentives that are attached to the outcomes from the carbon monoxide testing, and the Brief Tobacco Intervention Skills Certification trainings promoting more referrals to the program. COMMUNITY PRESENTATIONSAssisted by the HOSA students, the Health and Wellness Bingo activity was shared at various community events in the summer to children and adults focusing on Basics for Good Health and Wellness, Indicators for Medical Help, Nutrition to Keep You Fit, Good Practices, and Occupations in Health and Wellness. Beginning with the 2nd Annual Kauai Kids Summer Fest, there was a total of 72 children and adults; 75 students at the Kekaha Community Parks and Recreation Summer Fun Program; and 40 children and adults at the Hanapepe Community Blast from the 60's. Various activities were provided by the executive director at different health fairs throughout the year. Forty-three students from three Native Hawaiian Charter schools, 48 students at Kauai High School, and 12 adults at the Wellness Expo participated in word search and unscramble puzzles to learn more about health and wellness careers and ingredients for a healthy lifestyle. Students and adults also received information about Na Lei Wili AHEC organization, its programs, and upcoming events.DescriptionProgramServiceAccom
