DescriptionNORTHSIDE CENTER FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT, COMMUNITY-BASED AGENCY WHICH SERVES PEOPLE IN HARLEM AND THE SOUTH BRONX. THE AGENCY PROVIDES MENTAL HEALTH AND PREVENTIVE SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS AND ACCEPTS COPS REFERRALS, HAS AN EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER FOR CHILDREN WITH EMOTIONAL AND/OR BEHAVIORAL DIFFICULTIES, LEARNING PROBLEMS AND LANGUAGE DEFICITS AND BOTH A HEAD START AND EARLY HEAD START PROGRAM. OUR GOAL IS TO FOSTER THE HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND ADULTS BY PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY MENTAL HEALTH, PREVENTION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. ALMOST 25,000 VISITS WERE PROVIDED TO APPROXIMATELY 2000 CHILDREN AND ADULTS BY AN ARRAY OF STAFF INCLUDING TEACHERS, SOCIAL WORKERS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, PSYCHIATRISTS, ART THERAPISTS, SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SPECIALISTS, NURSES, CASE MANAGERS AND PARENT ADVOCATES. 1) The Mental Health Clinic: Northside's largest service unit (three mental health clinic sites) provides mental health services to children, families and adults who live in Harlem and the South Bronx who are experiencing a range of emotional and behavioral problems. The clinics are licensed by the New York State Office of Mental health and are also evaluated by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). The treatment modalities are individual, family and group psychotherapy, psychiatric and psychological evaluations, psychopharmacological services and case management. In fiscal year 2009-10, the mental health clinics provided mental health services to 1,417 clients (1,080 children). The most common diagnostic conditions treated are Depression (30%), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (26%) and Impulse Control/Disruptive Disorder (16%), with 37% of clients having more than one diagnosis. 2) Project SAFE: Project SAFE is a preventive service program whose goal is to prevent the removal of children from their families due to the impact of domestic violence, physical abuse, and/or neglect. It functions under the auspices of New York Children's Services (ACS) and New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS). Project SAFE provides individual and family counseling, groups for parents, home visits, case management services and linkages to other programs in the community which can support the family. In fiscal year 2009-10, Project SAFE worked with 139 adults who had a total of 246 children. Project SAFE was successful in preventing removal of a total of 4 children (two families). A unique aspect of Project SAFE is the Creative Arts Group Therapy Program funded by the World Childhood Foundation. It provides group art therapy to children who have been sexually abused, group therapy for the non-offending parent, and some combined parent/child art therapy groups. It is the only program in New York City using this combination of treatment modalities. 3) Home-Based Crisis Intervention Program (HBCI): HBCI is an intensive short term program to prevent the psychiatric hospitalization of children at imminent risk of this outcome. This program functions under the auspices of DOHMH. Using intensive interventions by case managers carrying low caseloads and available 24 hours a day, this program provides between four and six weeks of services to families in crisis. Services include home visits, activities with the child, psycho-education for parents, school visits and linkage to other programs that will provide therapeutic continuity upon completion of the HBCI Program. In fiscal year 2009-10 it successfully stabilized 85 out of 90 children (94.5%) to the point where psychiatric hospitalization was not required for a significant period of time. 4) RBI: RBI is a community out of school time/summer program which uses baseball and other activities to teach child many skills that are needed to be successful. RBI, through Robin Hood, requested Northside's participation in their program to assist with mental health issues that arise with some of their children. One part time Northside social worker was assigned to RBI (starting Fall 2008). This social worker provides onsite psychoeducation to parents and to RBI staff on children's emotional/behavioral issues; participates in some RBI programming in order to become known to the children; meets as requested with children in the program who experience problems during the program and, meets with program staff to identify children who may need mental health treatment and ongoing therapy. In this later situation, the child may be referred to Northside where this Northside social worker provides the intake for this client. This same clinician may be the clinician for this child if the clinician has space available. During fiscal year 2009-10, 7 children were referred from RBI to Northside for ongoing services with 6 completing intake and starting therapy. 5) Teen Program: The Northside Teen Mental Health program completed its second year. The goal of the program is to enhance the range of services provided to teens in Northside programs so that they can function better at school and at home and to have a broader perspective of their future as adults. The primary foci have been on adding mental health groups to the individual and family therapy already provided and adding after school/saturday activities for teens all led from a mental health perspective. All teens in the program have been impacted by some aspect of this program whether directly participating in the new therapy groups, attending the after school/saturday activities or from the clinical training provided to clinicians on working more effectively with this age group. 6) Our After-School/Summer Day Camp Program: After-School/Summer Day Camp Program includes after-school and summer activities designed to keep children with specail needs productive in a safe and supportive environment. The program serves children ages 5 through 12 years of age. Participants in the program grow socially and academically by participating in the various program offerings. This program is focused on supporting children with their homework and school projects each day upon their arrival. After the homework support session, children move through the program where they participate with various activities. Participants enjoy the opportunity to express themselves by participating in our arts and crafts program. All of the children attend gym and technology class every day. There are many exciting activities happening in our library ranging from story time to chess instruction. Many children in the program receive additional academic support as they work with individual reading specialists and tutors. During the summer and school year we explore many of the wonderful educational and cultural attractions our city offers. The program provides healthy snacks and meals each day. Our clinic provides therapeutic support to participants when appropriate. This program served 62 children during FY'10. 7) Computer classes: Our Technology Center offers a range of learning-based computer activities for all Northside children and teens, whether they are enrolled in our After School, Mental Health Clinic, Summer Day Camp, or TECC school programs. Northside TECC school students have computer instruction every day during the school year and twice daily during the summer. All students learn to use Scholastic Keys, with children's versions of Microsoft Office: Max Write (Word), Max Show (PowerPoint), and Max Count (Excel). They also learn to use Internet research tools, Google Earth, and educational games, which support their activities in math and reading During FY'10, 132 children were served. 8) The Jane Allen Emil Children's Library serves as a story-telling place for 60 children in our therapeutic school, TECC, who visit the library once a week to listen to stories and take out books. During the after-school hours, there are activities in the library for the program participants, who work in the library on their homework and school research projects, take out books to read at home, use the computer, and play table games. The library hosts three RIF (Reading is Fundamental) Fairs each year, at which children who attend Northside may choose a free book to take home (361 books were distributed in FY'10). The library also serves as a warm and welcoming drop-in place for children and families to wait for other family members attending therapy sessions. All members of our Northside community (children, parents, and staff) may check out books in our library, which is kept well-stocked with books that will be of interest. Number of clients served = 1,457. 9) The Evening Library program hosts over 1,228 families in the evening hours and on Saturdays 347 visitors during the year, so that family members not seeing clinicians have a place to wait and engage in educational activities. 10) Northside's Individualized Tutoring Program serves children struggling with special needs because of learning disabilities and/or emotional problemDescription
