DescThe 2019-2020 School year was shorted due to Covid-19 from March 2020 through the end of the year as mandated by the Federal, State & Local Governments. Before this time, the school operated at capacity and our programs consisted of the following:The Toddler Program consisted of two classrooms serving children ages one and a half year and walking steadily to three years. Both classrooms offered full-day programs and a half-day program. The half-day program served a total of 7 children. The all-day programs served a total of 19 children. Children transitioned from toddler to primary classrooms during the course of the year. The Primary Program consisted of five classrooms serving children ages 2 1/2 years to six years. Each classroom offered a morning program for all students and an afternoon, or extended day, program for the older students. A total of 88 students were served by the primary program, with 75 of them participating in extended day. Children transitioned from primary to the elementary classroom at the end of the school year. The Elementary Program consisted of four classrooms; two lower elementary and two upper elementary. The lower elementary served children ages six through nine years and the upper elementary served ages nine through 12. A total of 41 students attended the lower elementary program and a total of 36 students attended the upper elementary program. All three programs offer an opportunity for children to participate in a multi-day and night field trip. The two lower elementary classrooms normally spend several days on a local island learning about the environment through forest and wetlands studies, but this was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. One Upper Elementary classroom started the year studying at Camp Disappointment State Park at the mouth of the Columbia River. That trip is linked to their annual curriculum which focuses on the History and Government of the United States. This trip gave our students the opportunity to learn about the US exploration and expansion in the Pacific Northwest. They visited the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark spent their winter and learned about early maritime exploration at the Maritime Museum in Astoria. At the campsite our students also built their basic survival skills with fire building and team building activities, and they spoke with a Park Ranger to learn about how the Native Americans made early tools from local rocks and stones. The 2nd Upper Elementary classroom started the year studying the history and biology of the American Pacific Northwest. The year began with a four day campout to Kalaloch, Washington where the students studied tide pool habitats, explored rain forests and visited the Museum of the Makah Native American Nation. The Upper Elementary classrooms each had a trip planned for the Spring of 2020. One was to travel to the north, visiting Vancouver and Salt Spring Island in British Columbia where they would explore the local ecosystems and the culture of the First Nations people. The other expected to travel to Washington, D.C. where they expanded their education and understating of the government and legislative branches of the United States. Both trips were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of their expanding awareness of community and service to the community, the elementary students organized participation in several local projects. The children were directly involved in sponsoring holiday giving events, organizing fundraising events and organizing a volunteer project to clean up the neighborhood. The children also volunteered at a local food bank helping to serve its clientele.Desc

DescThe Summer Program offered care for toddlers, primary and elementary aged children during an eight week period. This program was offered 5 days a week, from 7am until 6pm and offered a program of Summer Fun over the eight weeks. Participants could enroll by the week, allowing more flexibility for family schedules. 112 children were served during the summer program once the Federal, State & Local Government allowed schools to reopen, albeit at a limited capacity from June to August 2020.Desc

DescThe Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) Program was introduced in the 2017/2018 school year. The teacher and a volunteer parent chaperone accompanied four students to New York City for the MMUN conference in February. This trip provided a direct opportunity for our eldest elementary students to put into practice our school's vision to "provide an excellent education that empowers children to become independent, creative empathetic life-long learners who will build a better world". This trip, and the MMUN experience in general are a culminating experience, allowing our students to draw on the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their elementary years at TTMS, including research, analytical thinking, collaboration, presentation skills and more. For the MMUN the students are required to research real-world problems and present possible solutions from the real perspective of the country they are representing. At the 2020 conference, our students represented the country of Australia and researched topics that ranged from Disability-Inclusive Development to the Reduction of Chemical Weapons. The Parent Education Program continued with strong offerings for the 2019-2020 school year. Communication between home and school was addressed with an updated parent handbook, weekly bulletins, a parent information web site, and formal and informal parent/teacher conferences. In addition, eight free parent workshops were held both at the school and at a local venue. More specifically, the school offered educational events focused on each level of the Toddler, Primary and Elementary programs. Social events for the school community were continued. Parents were also invited to a variety of celebration events during the school day. Families contributed over 1200 service hours for a wide variety of tasks.Desc
