DescExhibition and Collection Management: Exhibitions and Collections management attend to core functions of the art museum: stewardship of the permanent collections and the means of presenting the collections and exhibitions to visitors of the DIA. Expenses for exhibition projects are funded from restricted funds designated for exhibitions: expenses include organizer's fees, shipping and insurance costs, construction and installation costs, and payroll costs for temporary exhibitions staff (security and visitor reception). Nearly all DIA staff participates in some aspect of exhibition work. Learning and Interpretation provides interpretive planning to ensure the visitor's educational experience. Collections management activities include the creation, maintenance, repairs and improvements of the permanent collections galleries and all art movements for loans, conservation and periodic rotations of the collections in the permanent galleries, oversight of art storage, day-to-day monitoring of the collections and location/inventory control. The DIA maintains collections records, administers all incoming and outgoing loans of art, and the accessions of art into the collections and deaccessions from the collections, in compliance with rigorous collections management policies. The DIA creates publication quality photographs of the collection (now digital files), manages photographic records, manages rights and reproduction requests and provides some event photography services. Publications professionals oversee the editing and production of permanent collection gallery and exhibition labels and interpretive media, edits museum ephemera, and produces all museum publications such as collection and exhibition catalogues. Conservators oversee treatment, repair and restoration of the permanent collections and monitor the physical condition of the collections and the environment in which it is displayed and stored. Conservators also examine all outgoing loans from the collection and all incoming loans for special exhibitions. The Research Library and Archives has been an integral part of the museum since the late 19th century and serves the art historical needs of the museum staff, scholars and students. The collection contains more than 190,000 volumes, 300 periodical titles and 10,000 cubic feet of archival material. The DIA held the following exhibitions during FY 2013-14: Shirin Neshat, April 7 - July 7, 2013; Ellsworth Kelly: Prints, May 24 - September 8, 2013; Watch Me Move: The Animation Show, October 6, 2013 - January 5, 2014; Guest of Honor: Caravaggio's Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy, October 9, 2013 - January 12, 2014; Foto Europa, 1840 to the Present, October 25, 2013 - April 27, 2014; Balance of Power: A Throne for an African Prince, November 19, 2013 - March 16, 2014; Let Me Show You What I Saw: American Views on City and Country, 1912-1963, December 20, 2013 - June 29, 2014; Samurai: Beyond the Sword, March 9 - June 1, 2014; 77th Annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition, April 12 - June 8, 2014; and Detroit - Bruce Weber, June 20 - September 7, 2014. DescMuseum and Community Programs: The museum provides a full menu of public programming designed to provide educational opportunities; engage museum visitors of all ages and utilize the museum's position as a regional asset to extend the visitor-centered mission beyond the walls of the museum. Museum programs include the popular Friday Night Live program, bringing an array of local and national musical talent to perform in the museum. Weekend programs for families offer everything from artist demonstrations to puppet shows and storytelling. The DIA also programmed three seasons of the Detroit Film Theater, featuring the best in art films and independent cinema. A new area of significant program activity is that of Community Partnerships with local non-profit organizations. These include hosting events with the Detroit City Chess Club, Michigan Student Film Festival, Mosaic Youth Theatre, Rackham Symphony Choir and Midtown Detroit, Inc., a non-profit actively developing the historic commercial and residential real estate of midtown Detroit. Over the course of the fiscal year DIA programs served the following audiences: Detroit Film Theatre - 53,413 visits; Friday Night Live! - 30,366 visits; Sunday Music Bar - 14,000 visits; Family Sunday Programs 15,013 visits; miscellaneous program visits (artist demonstrations, community partnerships, special performances) - 19,226 visits. The DIA assesses the needs of the community and provides partnership opportunities through broad access, invitation and community engagement strategies. Access programs are designed to seek out underrepresented groups and provide opportunities for engagement and education. Examples of access programs include Gallery to Gallery with local art centers and Come Wonder Around for senior citizens. Each of these programs is designed to introduce community members to the museum by providing them with an invitation to participate in a tour of the museum and ease of access (transportation). Community relations staff works with departments within the DIA to develop and implement creative, collaborative projects that connect individuals to the DIA. Examples include the DIA's Inside|Out project and DIA Inspired. Inside|Out takes high quality reproductions to the streets and neighborhoods of the communities we serve and gives community members the opportunity to learn about the DIA's collection in their own neighborhood with temporary, walk-able outdoor galleries. To date, the DIA has worked with over 90 cities, townships and villages and has installed over 900 reproductions throughout the community. Community groups and the DIA staff work together to host community building events such as tours, talks and bike rides. The project has enabled the museum to develop lasting relationships with residents and community groups throughout the region. DIA Inspired :Beyond the Sword was a community engagement project that was developed collaboratively with the Detroit Garment Guild Group and invited local designers to visit the Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibition and create a garment from the inspiration. Exhibitions of the designs were displayed around the region and community members were asked to vote for their favorite. The project culminated with a runway show of all the designs at the DIA. The DIA supports museum programs and exhibitions through coordinated marketing efforts including paid advertising, online/social media platforms, direct mail, partnerships, email marketing and media relations. There were two major exhibitions during the FY: Watch Me Move: The Animation Show and Samurai: Beyond the Sword. Communications also supported a number of smaller exhibitions, including Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition, Let Me Show You What I Saw: American Views on City and Country, 1912-1963, Balance of Power: A Throne for an African Prince, Foto Europa: 1840 to Present, Guest of Honor: Caravaggio's Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy and Ellsworth Kelly: Prints. The DIA continued promotion of ongoing museum programs such as Friday Night Live, Family Sundays and Black History Month. The museum's award-winning brand campaign appeared in television ads, radio spots, print advertising, online advertising and billboards.Desc

$3,286,125$0$38,760Curatorial Services: Curatorial Services include the efforts of our curatorial staff. The primary responsibility of the curatorial staff is to manage the DIA's world class art collection. An encyclopedic collection of approximately 60,000 objects, this corpus boasts some of the finest examples of sculptures, paintings, textiles and decorative arts from five continents and spans a period from prehistory to the present. In addition, curators also conduct scholarly research and presentations that support special exhibitions and museum operations.
$2,486,185$0$40,011Learning & Interpretation (L&I): These activities help the public find personal meaning in art by leading interpretive planning and media development for all special exhibitions and gallery installations, providing services for K-12 students and teachers, facilitating gallery tours and art talks in the museum and off-site, and offering art making programs for all ages. The DIA also trains and coordinates the efforts of more than 100 volunteers who deliver select L&I programs. During FY13/14, L&I activities included interpretive planning for six exhibitions which were attended by more than 100,000 visitors. Exhibitions included texts, videos, hands-on interactives, and visitor response stations, some of which were developed with community input. Services for K-12 students and teachers continued to expand in FY13/14, with 77,000 students benefiting from DIA field trips. All third, fourth and fifth grade students at 3 area schools experienced the Art Discovery Program, which includes 5 sequential DIA visits for gallery talks and art making. More than 800 teachers participated in workshops and information sessions. The DIA also presented the 77th annual juried Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition. L&I guided 74,000 visitors on gallery tours and led another 3,000 through art talks in the museum and in the community. More than 18,000 people joined drop-in art making workshops in the museum and at art fairs and festivals throughout the metro Detroit region, and another 7,300 took advantage of the Drawing in the Galleries program. DIA teaching artists and tour guides also provided twice-weekly Healing Arts programs for patients at Children's Hospital of Detroit and series visits for clients at the Dingell Veterans Administration Hospital and other community service organizations. The DIA also collaborates with the Michigan Alzheimer's Association on a gallery talk and art making program for people living with the disease and their caregivers. All L&I programs are based on a learner-centered, constructivist model through which L&I staff and volunteers continually deepen their understanding of visitors in order to facilitate experiences that encourage people to notice more, wonder, reconsider and express ideas.
$1,481,865$0$0Capital Projects: Capital projects are those projects that typically increase the longevity of the facility and the preservation of the art collection. The facility is owned by the City of Detroit so capital related costs are expensed by the DIA as incurred. These costs are paid for using restricted funds designated for capital purposes. Capital projects are reviewed by the Building Committee of the Board of Directors. During the year, the DIA began three major capital projects. Major improvements were made to the lighting on the museum's campus. New energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures were added across our campus and many existing light fixtures were upgraded to LED as well. We upgraded the traffic flow, technology and security in our existing museum parking lot off John R Street including pay-in-lane ticketing machines, security cameras, new signage and security call stations. The HVAC and electrical systems were upgraded to current technology in our 1200 seat auditorium. This included new air handlers, all new wiring and restored light fixtures, all original to the 1928 building.
$1,046,303$0$423,570Enterprise Activities: The enterprise activities include program services for the retail gift shop, café, catering and Crystal Gallery. The revenue generated from enterprise activities of $423,570 does not include $771,535 of net income from sales of inventory, as shown in Part VIII, Statement of Revenue, line 10c. The expenses include program overhead expenses and an indirect cost allocation from museum operations.
$843,439$0$510,394General Admissions: The museum requires a modest general admission of $8 per adult, $6 per senior, $4 per youth (ages 6-17) and $5 per college student. Residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties receive free unlimited general museum admission in accordance with the passage of the County Art Institute Authority millage. Admissions for members continue to be free. Visitors to the museum have the opportunity to view the permanent collection in the galleries, participate without additional charge in many diverse activities including lectures, musical performances, drop-in workshops, docent-led and self-guided tours. A limited number of exhibitions require an entry fee that includes general admission to the museum. Members receive an allotment of exhibition tickets as part of their membership benefits.
$842,865$0$108,348Support Groups and Auxiliaries: The DIA has 11 auxiliaries and support groups. Each group offers its members exciting opportunities to explore common interests, develop new tastes, make new friends, learn about collecting and become personally involved in the life and support of the museum. Open exclusively to DIA members, auxiliaries offer behind the scenes experiences, private viewings of galleries and special exhibitions and extraordinary trips. Auxiliaries are also involved in fund raising for special museum projects and the acquisition of art for the DIA's world renowned collection.
$411,913$0$4,291Group Reservations: Group Reservations provides guided tours and self-guided services to adult groups and school groups of 15 people or more. The DIA offers a direct phone line or website bookings for reservations. Group Reservations is affiliated with several tour operator organizations including American Bus Association, Ontario Motor Coach, Circle Michigan and the Detroit Metropolitan Convention and Visitor Bureau and attends 3-4 trade show and conferences per year to encourage new business. Proactive prospecting of new tour business is a daily function of the Group Reservations Department. Each group arrival is personally welcomed to the DIA to ensure visitor satisfaction. Groups are reserved and paid in full in advance of their arrival. A customer service satisfaction survey is sent to every group planner to gauge satisfaction levels. A very strong focus is placed on increasing the group attendance in Special Exhibitions. Group Reservations hosts DIA Familiarization Tours for local community leaders in market specific areas. Group Reservations actively participates in Community Outreach. Hotel Packages: The Group Reservations Department is responsible for the museum hotel package. As of June 30, 2014, the DIA currently has 14 preferred hotel partners. Hotels purchase advance admission tickets and create a package with their overnight accommodations. Some offer transportation to and from the museum and a welcome amenity that is pre-purchased from the museum gift shop. We also offer hotel information on the DIA website that links directly to the hotel reservation system.
$94,146$0$13,295Volunteer Programming: The DIA Volunteer Council supports museum visitors, staff and other auxiliary support groups. Volunteers work front line, outreach and behind the scenes. In all, 676 DIA Volunteers donated 56,688 hours of service during 2013-2014, which was their 52nd year of service to the DIA.

The DIA completed an analysis of its tax position and determined that no amounts were required to be recognized in the financial statements at June 30, 2014. The DIA does not expect an increase or decrease in unrecognized tax benefits within the next 12 months.
