DescEducation - Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers an array of degree programs designed for students focused on helping people live healthier lives. There are approximately 1,600 students enrolled at the College and more than 140 full- and part-time faculty. The College offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program and four-year bachelor's degrees in Biomedical Technology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Health and Human Sciences, Microbiology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. ACPHS also has master's degree programs in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Cytotechnology & Molecular Cytology, Health Outcomes Research, Molecular Biosciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition, students may pursue joint degrees in the fields of medicine, law, and business through cooperative agreements with area institutions. Opportunities exist for students within each of these programs to work side-by-side with faculty on innovative research projects in areas related to cancer, infectious disease, and heart disease. These experiences are not typically afforded to undergraduates at most schools and are part of what distinguishes ACPHS from other colleges and universities. Graduates of the College are prepared for a range of careers such as: biochemist, clinical laboratory scientist, consumer safety officer, drug information specialist, environmental toxicologist, health policy analyst, hospital administrator, pharmacist, physician, physician assistant, and research scientist. ACPHS has a satellite campus in Colchester, Vermont. There are approximately 240 full-time students enrolled on the Vermont Campus. The ACPHS-Vermont Campus offers the only Doctor of Pharmacy program in the state. Students may also pursue the master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Vermont Campus.Desc

DescResearch - The research taking place across the departments and schools at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is helping address several of the world's most pressing health threats. Faculty of the College are engaged in a wide range of research projects, including: studying biodefense strategies to thwart potential anthrax attacks or deployment of the francisella bacteria; exploring the impact of parental resources on children's health; developing chemical compounds for limiting the harmful effects of the sun; and working on numerous projects related to the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. Complementing these efforts is the College's Pharmaceutical Research Institute (PRI), a center for drug discovery and development that was founded in 2003, and is led by Vice Provost for Research Shaker Mousa. PRI investigators possess expertise in fields such as nanotechnology, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology. PRI also offers research opportunities and resources for both undergraduate and graduate students of the College. ACPHS boasts strong concentrations of clinical pharmacy scientists in the areas of nephrology and infectious disease. Their individual and collective expertise allow for projects along the entire continuum of clinical and translational research, with research findings being directly implemented for the improvement of patient care.Desc

DescCommunity Service Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences believes that an institution of higher learning has a responsibility to the communities outside its campus borders. The College works with a number of school, community, and youth organizations through the following programs and events: ACPHS Academy is an afterschool enrichment program that promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education for at-risk students in Albany elementary and middle schools. The program seeks to instill good study habits, increase confidence and self-respect, and ultimately help students realize that college can be part of their futures. As of fall 2014, there were 130 students spanning grades 3-9 enrolled in the program. The Summer Enrichment Program, which runs for six weeks each summer, is for area high school students who demonstrate interest in a career in the sciences. Each week of the program consists of three days of research with an ACPHS faculty member, one day of instructional activities, and one day to tour regional pharmaceutical companies. Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, brings together hundreds of participants from the College and local community to raise money for cancer. The College consistently finishes among the top fundraising schools in the country among those with comparable enrollments. The College's annual Health and Wellness Expo provides flu shots, health screenings, and information on subjects such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. The Expo includes a Medication Takeback Event, providing area residents with a safe, cost-free opportunity to dispose of their expired or unused medications. ACPHS students and faculty contribute to the community in a variety of other ways, including volunteer work and support for the American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Clubs, Great American Smokeout, Make a Wish Foundation, March of Dimes, Meals on Wheels, National Kidney Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude Children's Hospital, Toys for Tots, and many more.Desc

Form And Line ReferenceFormAndLineReferenceDescExplanationExplanationTxt
Schedule D, Part V, Line 4The College's policy for distributing endowment fund earnings is based on the need to support its various programs and maintenance of facilities. Whether any distributions are made from endowment funds is decided annually by the Board of Trustees in conjunction with the College's annual operating budget. Accordingly, over the long term, the College expects the current spending policy to allow its endowment to grow at a rate that exceeds the rate of inflation. This is consistent with the College's objective to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets held in perpetuity or for a specified term as well as to provide additional real growth through new gifts and investment return. The current investment policy has a spending policy of 4% per annum, based on a historical three-year moving average of donor restricted endowment fund market value on June 30. No distributions will be made which will result in the market value of the donor restricted endowment to fall below the original corpus. In addition, the Board of Trustees has determined that no funds will be withdrawn from the Board-Designated Endowment.
Schedule D, Part X, Line 2The College is a not-for-profit organization as described in Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is exempt from federal income taxes. The College has been classified as a publicly-supported organization that is not a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Code. The College files a form 990 annually with the Internal Revenue Service. When annual returns are filed, some tax positions taken are highly certain to be sustained upon examination by the taxing authorities, while other tax positions are subject to uncertainty about the technical merits of the position or amount of the position's tax benefit that would ultimately be sustained. Management evaluated the College's tax positions, including interest and penalties attributable thereto, and concluded that there are no tax positions that required adjustment in its financial statements as of June 30, 2014 and 2013. Forms 990 filed by the College are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service up to three years from the extended due date of each return. Forms 990 filed by the College are no longer subject to examination for the fiscal years ended June 30, 2010 and prior.
