| Description | Arthritis and Clinical Immunology - With the addition of OMRF's Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence, his program underwent a major expansion in 2011. The MS Center is home to a research clinic that treats thousands of Oklahomans suffering from MS and will serve as the keystone of OMRF's expanded clinical research efforts. With this newest addition to OMRF's Autoimmune Disease Institute, OMRF now has major clinical research initiatives in four different diseases in which the body turns the weapons of its immune system against itself: lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome. Indeed, those efforts were further bolstered in 2011 when OMRF received a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to create the Oklahoma Sjogren's Syndrome Center of Research Translation. That Center, which will be part of the Autoimmune Disease Institute, will focus on developing new ways to diagnose and treat Sjogren's, an illness estimated to affect as many as 4 million Americans. | Description |

| Description | Cardiovascular Biology - In 2011, OMRF's cardiovascular biologists continued their focus on sepsis, a deadly blood poisoning that can strike quickly and kill mercilessly. The illness claims more than 100,000 American lives each year, and in 2011 OMRF scientists secured a new grant from the National Institutes of Health to examine new treatment strategies for sepsis. Working with scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, they will test a therapeutic agent they believe will avoid tissue damage and organ failure, ultimately saving lives. This past year, scientists in this program also made new insights that could help fight cancer. Their work showed how a family of proteins known as epsins might be used to prevent the growth of cancer cells. And they also made new insights about the role a molecule called MicroRNA 19 plays in cancer's movement. If researchers can increase MicroRNA 19 levels in patients with certain cancers, it could slow or even stop the spread of the disease to other parts of the body. | Description |

| Description | Immunobiology and Cancer - Immunobiology and Cancer Immunologists at OMRF made a series of novel findings about influenza and vaccinations. Chief among these discoveries were studies showing that African-Americans form more effective responses to the flu vaccine than European-Americans and that routine flu shots may provide added benefits against new strains of the virus, such as so-called swine flu, that may arise. As the potential for an influenza pandemic remains a major concern for public health authorities, OMRF scientists continue to move ahead with efforts to develop a deeper understanding of and more ways to effectively combat this virus. Developmental biologists in this program also made an unexpected finding when they added a new gene to lab mice. They found that the gene (known technically as PDGRFbeta) blocked certain types of fat production. The research could hold the key to understanding how humans create fat-and whether a drug might one day stop this process. | Description |

If a material conflict is identified, the Committee analyzes whether the contemplated transaction may be authorized as just, fair, and reasonable to the Foundation. The Governance Committee then makes a recommendation to the Foundation's Executive Committee regarding the management of all potential conflicts it has identified. The final decision as to the approval and, where applicable, management of all such potential conflicts rests in the sole discretion of the Executive Committee, which make such decisions based upon the welfare of the Foundation and the advancement of its purpose. The recommendations of the Governance Committee and decisions of the Executive Committee are documented in the respective minutes of these Committees' regular meetings. |
