DescriptionThe Brooklyn Museum studies, preserves and exhibits a vast and comprehensive collection that spans nearly 5,000 years of history and broadly represents virtually every culture in the world. In FY 2010, a diverse audience of over 375,000 visitors explored this extraordinary resource through permanent installations of the Museum's American, Ancient Near Eastern, African, Asian, Contemporary, Decorative, Egyptian, European, Feminist, and Native American art and Photography collections. Several areas of the Museum's collections, including American and Egyptian art, are generally considered to be among the highest quality in the world. Traveling exhibitions, such as Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism and To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum, provided unique opportunities for audiences from across the nation to experience works from the Museum's renowned collection.Description

DescriptionSpecial Exhibitions The Brooklyn Museum pioneers the presentation and interpretation of the visual and artistic heritage of world cultures. A well-rounded menu of exhibitions maintains its role as a relevant and meaningful resource at the forefront of arts scholarship. In FY 2010, nine special exhibitions: developed and extended the cultural and art historical themes of the Museum's collection; helped to bridge the cultural racial and economic gap between the Museum's traditional audience and a broader public; and attracted extraordinary public attention and attendance.Description

DescriptionEducationInnovative education and public programs including programs for K-12 students, teachers, families and adults help an estimated 150,000 visitors each year to: explore the collection and special exhibitions on view; use the arts to strengthen classroom learning; engage in hands-on art-making; and build a life-long connection to the visual arts. Nationally-recognized programs such as First Saturdays have helped the Museum build one of the most diverse audiences of any museum in the nation with 40% who self-identify as persons of color, 50% under the age of 35 and many first-time museum goers. These programs are central to the Museum's mission of making the experience of the visitor its first priority, and of creating an environment where all feel welcome------to be challenged, delighted, educated, and inspired.Description

Part III, Line 1a:THE MUSEUM'S ART COLLECTION IS MADE AVAILABLE TO ITS MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC TO ENCOURAGE AND EXPAND THE STUDY AND APPRECIATION OF ART THROUGH A PROGRAM OF PUBLIC EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. COMPONENTS OF THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION, WHICH HAVE BEEN ACQUIRED THROUGH PURCHASES AND CONTRIBUTIONS, ARE NOT RECOGNIZED AS ASSETS ON THE STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION. PURCHASES OF COLLECTION ITEMS ARE RECORDED IN THE YEARS IN WHICH THE ITEMS ARE ACQUIRED AS DECREASES IN UNRESTRICTED OR TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED NET ASSETS IN ACCORDANCE WITH DONOR RESTRICTIONS ON THE ASSETS USED TO PURCHASE THE ITEMS. CONTRIBUTED COLLECTION ITEMS ARE NOT REFLECTED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS BECAUSE THE MUSEUM DOES NOT HOLD COLLECTION ITEMS FOR SALE. PROCEEDS FROM DEACCESSIONS ARE ADDED TO TEMPORARILY RESTRICTED NET ASSETS AND ARE USED TO ACQUIRE OTHER ITEMS FOR THE COLLECTION, EXCEPT FOR SIMILAR ITEMS ACQUIRED IN THE SAME YEAR WHICH ARE REPORTED AS UNRESTRICTED.
Part III, Line 4:History of the Collection: The Brooklyn Museum possesses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of any museum in the United States. Its collections began in the latter half of the 19th century with the decision that the institution (founded as the Brooklyn Apprentices Library Association and then the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences) would become a collecting institution. A major bequest from founder and benefactor Augustus Graham to acquire works from living American artists lead to its first major acquisitions including Asher B. Durand's First Harvest in the Wilderness which entered the collection in 1855. The collection grew exponentially with the construction of a new facility by architects McKim, Meade and White starting in the late 1890s and continuing through the 1920s. Public subscriptions supported several major purchases including the Tissot Life of Christ series (1901), the Sargent Watercolors (1909) and the Barye bronzes (1910). The arrival of curator Stewart Culin as curator of "Ethnology" opened up new collecting areas and built the foundation for today's collections of Arts of the Americas, African and Asian Art. The foundation of the Egyptian collection began with the donation of The Charles Edwin Wilbour collection followed by an endowment to build this collection which allowed the Museum to purchase The New-York Historical Society's entire Egyptian collection in 1932. The arrival of Trustee Luke Vincent Lockwood, a pioneering scholar and collector of American colonial furniture led to the assembly of period rooms in the early part of the 20th century. In 1934, the Museum changed the focus of its collections from a general scholarly collection to a fine arts collection. With this, many objects were de-accessioned (including natural history collections) and many formerly ethnographic collections were redefined as fine art. Also it continued to expand its collections, particularly in the areas of American Art and Arts of the Americas. Organization of the Collection: Today the Brooklyn Museum's collections are organized as follows: 1. Arts of the Americas and Europe a. European Art b. American Art c. Arts of the Americas d. Decorative Arts 2. Arts of Ancient Egypt, Africa and Asia a. Asian Art b. Islamic Art c. African and Pacific Art d. Egyptian Art 3. Contemporary Art a. Contemporary Art b. Photography 4. Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art Each of these curatorial divisions is overseen by a Managing Curator who oversees curators working in each of the collection areas. Curators are supported by the Conservation, Registration, and Collections Management divisions that assist with the preservation, cataloguing and exhibition of works from the collection. Building the Collection: New acquisitions are guided by a Collections Plan that is officially adopted by the Board of Trustees and reviewed by the Collections Committee and the curatorial team on a regular basis. New acquisitions are considered according to the following criteria: * Will the work be immediately useful in the galleries and will it expand the visitor experience there? * Will the work be transformative for the collection? Will it be a work that becomes part of the canon for which the museum is known and remembered? * Can it be used to illuminate more than one collection area, and bridge the gaps between collections and cultures? * Is it an object of true excellence, fully authentic and in good condition? * Does it have special resonances with works already in the collection? Will it increase the usefulness of existing collections by making them more understandable? Using the Collection to Further the Mission: The Brooklyn Museum is dedicated to the continued study, preservation, exhibition and growth of its collection as a way to serve its mission: to act as a bridge between the rich artistic heritage of world cultures, as embodied in its collections, and the unique experience of each visitor and to serve its diverse publics as a dynamic, innovative and welcoming center for learning through the visual arts. In FY 2010, over 375,000 visitors explored works from the Museum's wide-ranging collections. Additionally, nine special exhibitions of the highest quality developed and extended cultural and art historical themes focused on and supported by the Museum's rich collections and aimed to bridge the cultural, racial, ethnic and economic gap between the Museum's traditional audience and a broader public in Brooklyn and beyond. Finally, innovative education and public programs including programs for K-12 students, teachers, families and adults helped an estimated 150,000 visitors to explore the collection as well as the special exhibitions on view.
Part V, Line 4:THE BOARD IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE APPLICABLE STATE REGULATIONS WILL APPROPRIATE AS MUCH OF NET APPRECIATION AS IS PRUDENT CONSIDERING THE MUSEUM'S LONG AND SHORT-TERM NEEDS, PRESENT AND ANTICIPATED FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS, EXPECTED TOTAL RETURN ON ITS INVESTMENTS, PRICE LEVEL TRENDS AND GENERAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. UNDER THE MUSEUM'S SPENDING POLICY, A PERCENTAGE OF THE ADJUSTED AVERAGE MARKET VALUE OF CERTAIN INVESTMENTS MEASURED AT MARCH 31 OF EACH OF THE THREE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING YEARS IS MADE AVAILABLE ON EACH JULY 1 TO SUPPORT CURRENT OPERATIONS OF THE MUSEUM AND CERTAIN NONOPERATING ACTIVITIES AS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD. THE AMOUNT APPROVED DURING THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2010 WAS SIX AND A HALF PERCENT OR $5,746,665. DUE TO MARKET CONDITIONS, THE MUSEUM WITHDREW ONLY $5,287,044 OF THE APPROVED APPROPRIATION.Description of Intended Use of Endowment Funds:
Part X:The Museum recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not of being sustained. Management has determined that the Museum had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure. The Museum is no longer subject to audits by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for tax years prior to 2006.Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48:

Third Party Use:Part I, Line 32b:HIRE AND USE OF THIRD PARTIES: The Brooklyn Museum occasionally contracts with commercial auction houses such as Sotheby's or Christie's to sell non-cash contributions of works of art or personal property. These may be works that have been part of the collection for years, but that have been recently deaccessioned, or they may, less frequently, be works of art or personal property donated to the Museum with the specific intention that they be sold to realize funds in cash. The Brooklyn Museum has standing contracts with some auction houses outlining terms and conditions for this purpose; with other auction houses, terms and conditions are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11The Brooklyn Museum's Board of Trustees has delegated responsibility and oversight for the form 990 to the Finance Committee. The form 990 is prepared by the Museum's auditors with direct input from the Museum's administration. An electronic draft of the form 990 is supplied to the entire Board of Trustees for comment. Additionally, all members of the Board of Directors are invited to the Finance Committee meeting at which the final draft of the form 990 is reviewed prior to being filed by with the IRS. The Board's Treasurer serves as the chair of the Finance Committee. Participating in the meeting are the Board Chair and various other officers including the Museum Director and other senior administrators.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12cThe Brooklyn Museum has in place a conflict of interest policy. The policy and disclosure guidelines are distributed to all Trustees on an annual basis along with a conflict of interest questionnaire and disclosure form that they must complete and sign. Completed questionnaires are reviewed by the Deputy Director for Development and Board Chairperson. Any new conflicts are brought to the attention of the Director and if necessary to the Board Chairperson. Trustees with conflicts must recuse themselves from meetings and/or the decision-making process, as appropriate.
Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A Compensation Committee of trustees exists and is a subcommittee of the Finance Committee members. This committee is responsible for determining compensation for senior level administrative and curatorial staff. Compensation is based upon comparable data and functionally comparable positions in similarly situated organizations nationwide as well as market-driven data for functions that fall outside museums. The Executive Director's salary is determined by a long standing contract approved by senior trustees. The salaries shown are for the calendar year 2009. In July 2009 there were no salary increases for non-union staff. The last compensation review process was completed in July 2010, at which a 2% increase was approved for non-union staff.
Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19The Brooklyn Museum's governing documents and financial statements are made available to the public upon request. Additionally, its IRS form 990 is available to the public online at www.guidestar.org.
